Unity with Purpose - "One Body, Many Parts"

"For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body - so it is with Christ" - 1 Corinthians 12:12

Every team is made up of people with unique gifts, personalities, and callings.  Paul reminds us that just as the human body has different parts that work together, so should we function in unity. In 1 Corinthians chapter 12 we learn that a variety of spiritual gifts are given to Christians, however, all spiritual gifts and ministries are given by the same Holy Spirit. It is important for us to understand that none of the spiritual gifts are given as a way of enriching or serving just the one who is gifted but is intended for serving others in the body of Christ.

Similarly, when working on a team it is important to understand that in order to be effective we must make it a mission to utilize our gifts and talents for the purpose of enriching the team and mission of the organization.

Here are 4 ways to have a team to be unified with purpose as one body:

  1. Encourage team members to identify their strengths. Effective team performance comes from helping others on the team to recognize and appreciate the unique gifts, skills and talents that others bring to the group.

"To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good" - 1 Corinthians 12:7

Paul teaches us 1 Corinthians 12 that it is in error to have the perspective that some Christians were given gifts while others were not. On the contrary, as we see here in verse 7, every believer is given some manifestation of the Spirit.

Each person on the team has something they are naturally good at - whether it's organizing, creative thinking, encouraging others, problem solving, teaching or communicating clearly. It is important that we  identify what that something is. When we are able to self-identify and help others to do the same, we will find that the functionality of the team will instantly become more effective.

  1. Encourage team members to celebrate each other's strengths.  An effective team actively acknowledges and appreciates the natural gifts in each other. This builds confidence, deepens respect and reminds everyone that every member is important.

"If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. - 1 Corinthians 12:26

Paul gives us a better understanding here in verse 26 that no one body part is an island and that if one part of the body suffers then they all suffer. Conversely if one is honored, they all rejoice. Paul suggests that even if one body part is ok the pain of another cannot be ignored.  In fact, God designed us in such a way that if there is pain in one part of the body, then another part of the body may try to compensate for the pain.

Understanding this analogy helps us to conceptualize how celebrating and honoring others on the team will have similar impact on the whole team. When we acknowledge, appreciate and honor the unique abilities and qualities that others bring to the team, we foster a culture of where people feel valued.

"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves" -  Romans 12:10

  1. Create opportunities for people to serve in their areas of gifting. An effective team makes room for everyone's gift. Allowing people to use their God given talents in ways that make the most impact to the team will yield endless tangible and productive results.

"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace" - 1 Peter 4:10

The gifts and talents we possess all come from God. Everyone has specific spiritual gifts or natural abilities that God has placed in them and therefore it is important that we are intentional about allowing opportunities for these gifts to manifest.

When individuals are positioned where their strengths shine - whether through organizing, encouraging, teaching or creating, they serve with joy and excellence.  This not only strengthens the team but also allows each member to experience the fulfillment of walking in their God-given purpose.

  1. Reinforce that no one's role is insignificant.  On an effective team, every person matters. Even if someone's role isn't in the spotlight, their work still helps the whole team succeed.

"The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you", nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you,". On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable" - 1 Corinthians 12:21-22

Paul is emphasizing here that no role functions independently of the other. Much of the function of each and every body part depends on one or more of the other parts of the body. The hands can't move unless the brain tells it to do so, the brain can't function unless the digestive properties of the stomach are properly functioning and the stomach can't function unless the mouth is doing what it's supposed to do and so forth and so on. The full body works as one machine and not one body part can function independently outside of the body.

Effectiveness on a team begins to flourish when we understand that each and every team member is an important part of the team. Every role, visible or not, fulfills a specific purpose. When everyone understands that their role has meaning, it removes comparison and competition. Instead team members begin to respect one another's contributions and work together with humility and gratitude.
